The Department of Surgical Services at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center is
staffed by 27 full time attendings, 7 part time attendings, and 5 Orthopedic surgeons from SUNY.
Brookdale University Hospital is a Level 2 Trauma Center. Our goal is to provide quality,
compassionate and comprehensive care to our patients.
The Department of Surgical Services is one of the largest departments within the facility. Many
of our attending physicians are also Board-Certified in subspecialties. Brookdale University Hospital is applying for a Center of Excellence status in Bariatric procedures. Brookdale University Hospital performs over 10,000 surgical procedures yearly.
The Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery department is a weight management program designed to treat individuals suffering with Obesity. It is a medically supervised and highly specialized program made up of a multi-disciplinary health care team of Surgeons, Internists, Psychologists, Nutritionists, Nursing Staff, Support Staff and a Program Coordinator. The benefits of Bariatric Surgery include more than weight loss including the reduction in the complications and health risks associated directly with morbid obesity including diabetes, coronary artery disease, fatty liver disease, obstructive sleep apnea and reflux disease.
Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center has a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach to the detection and treatment of breast cancer. Brookdale’s Breast Health Services promotes early detection of Breast Cancer, and if diagnosed, provides appropriate medical care with comprehensive approach to treatment and emotional support.
Critical Care Unit:
The Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center is also a Level 2 Trauma Center. The Surgical Intensive Care unit is covered 24 hours a day by two surgical intensivists. The Critical Care unit is an eight-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit, which cares for all critically ill patients from all surgical subspecialties.
Hand, Plastic, and Reconstructive surgery:
The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery’s staff of board certified physicians and registered nurses, have extensive training and experience to provide the finest care available in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery and provide ER consultation 24 hours a day.
Wound Healing Center:
The Wound Healing Center is staffed with a team of highly skilled and trained technicians and nurses. It has a mission statement to improve the quality of life of patients suffering from wounds causing pain and threatening disability, loss of limb or life. We do this through a multidisciplinary integrated team approach in both the outpatient and inpatient level in order to provide the best care possible.
Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery:
The Department of Surgery at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center provides Laparoscopic and Robotic surgery for elective, urgent and emergent procedures. Our surgeons are among the leaders in minimally invasive surgery in Brooklyn. Our surgeons and residents are trained in advanced techniques and perform such procedures as Cholecystectomy (gall bladder), Splenectomy (spleen), Small Bowel Surgery, Appendectomy, Hernia, Colon Resection, Stomach Resection, and Bariatric Surgery. Our faculty includes oncology surgeons who perform advanced procedures on a regular basis. These approaches are minimally invasive and, couples a shorter recovery period with a lower risk of post-operative infection and pain.
Brookdale Hospital’s Division of Neurosurgery offers the surgical treatment for disorders of the brain and spine. We utilize various modern technologies to achieve this goal which include the Surgical Microscope and Stereotactic Navigation for both brain and spine surgery. Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery:
This division treats patients (adults and children) with diseases of the upper respiratory tract, larynx, ear, nose, sinuses, head and neck, esophageal and tracheobronchial tree.
Brookdale University Hospital is the first hospital in Brooklyn to use the da Vinci S HD System, a new robotic technology for surgeries. The new surgical system integrates 3D HD endoscopy and state-of-the-art robotic technology to virtually extend the surgeon’s eyes and hands and ultimately provides patients with a better surgical procedure.
Dr. Hechtman provides outpatient and inpatient pediatric surgical coverage and consultation to NICU and PACU attendings.
Our surgeons are Fellowship trained and have extensive experience in advanced cancer treatment techniques such as, but not limited to, Seed Implantation for Prostrate Cancer, Mammosite for Breast Cancer, Gliasite for Brain Tumors, and HDR Brachytherapy for various types of malignancy. Integrated care is provided with Medicine and Radiation Oncologists.
The Thoracic team includes Board Certified Thoracic Surgeons, all of whom are experienced Cardiothoracic Surgeons with special interest in general Thoracic procedures (trachea, lung, thymus, pericardium, heart, esophagus and diaphragm) and especially minimally invasive thorascopic techniques.
We have a nationally certified Level 2 Program with 24/7 attending coverage. Each is Fellowship trained and certified as specialists in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. Attendings are present in the hospital on 24 hour rotations.
Provide four board certified surgeons with expertise in Vascular Reconstruction and Minimally Invasive Procedures. They provide access procedures for all patients requiring hemodialysis and 24/7 emergency care for all patients including trauma.
